The story of WWW micro marketplaces
Since my first keyword input into Altavista search engine in the nineties,
the internet has evolved so fastly that we tend to forget that it before everything about people and ideas, not just tech and sales. Until this time so many tech companies were born and a lot of them are dead now.
It was a small community of folks sharing stories, ideas, and knowledge online. Folks like Justin Hall who created hotwired which turns out to be the first User Generated Content solution years before social networks like Facebook … Now it is this giant marketplace where startups and big companies compete to gain clicks and sales. When google supplanted Altavista, the search engine and companies like goto, overture introduced keyword advertising which took the internet from a place of sharing ideas to this big marketplace it becomes today. The worldwide web left the segment of early adopters who were nerds and geeks of universities or wealthy families and reached the mass. The global usage of the internet made a lot of people see it as a global marketplace but it is a very segmented marketplace. The internet isn't a global marketplace, it is an aggregate of micro marketplaces.
I use to say that When you see something with the correct lens you better have the chance to bring fresh innovative ideas about this thing.
