A marketplace is a matching engine
Building a marketplace is about finding shared interest and building a medium that facilitates the share of THE BENEFITS of this interest among participants. I found a lot of definitions about what a marketplace is but this definition is mine and I think it better helps me see correctly what marketplace is ? and what can be marketplaced ? this second question is very important in today's world of the internet where marketplaces are kings because they own a medium of shared interest for example amazon owns a big medium of shared interest the interest being the need of exchanging digital or physicals things. In the eCommerce marketplaces, the seller is interested in leaving something in exchange for another thing ( money in this case money but it can be another thing) where the buyer is interested in acquiring the thing that the seller would leave. The matching function which always is a core functionality of a marketplace is with the example of amazon the fact that the value perceived by the buyer is equal to the value pinned by the seller. I was tempted to choose Facebook as an example but it would need more explanation to show that social media is a type of marketplace. Yes, Social media are marketplaces. I am asking myself if everything in the internet isn’t marketplaces.
Like a stock exchange matching engine, each marketplace has a matching function. I was saying nearly a year before that technology is a matching engine. Stock Exchanges are marketplaces. Is technology a marketplace. I guess that if it is. It is a marketplace that matches real problems with good solutions. Matching pain with a solution is a core functionality of many marketplaces like uber;…….. building this kind of marketplace involves finding who has specific pain and who can fix this pain and trying to define a medium that will help them meet easily as dating app does. I am the only one who is still not helped by a dating app.
